How our senior movers handle your move, step by step

  1. A free estimate, your way. Call us, show us around on a video walkthrough, or have us come by in person. You can also request a free estimate online and add a walkthrough video.
  2. A plan with you and your family. We go over the date, the new floor plan, what’s coming along and any building rules. Family members are welcome to join the call.
  3. Packing, as much or as little as you like. Our crews can pack the whole home, one room, or just the fragile pieces. See our packing and unpacking services, and ask us about packing materials. Our trucks carry complimentary wardrobe boxes on moving day, so hanging clothes can travel on their hangers.
  4. Careful moving. Our trained crews take furniture apart when needed and put it back together, with no disassembly fee. We also move pianos, pool tables and antiques, and we build custom crates for fragile antiques.
  5. Setting up the new place. We reassemble furniture, set up beds, place each piece from your floor plan and hang pictures. Unpacking is a separate service you can add.
  6. What isn’t coming along. Our junk removal service offers same-day or next-day pickups. Then our move-out cleaning crew can clean the old home, including inside the oven, fridge and cabinets, with baseboards done by hand. Cleaning is covered by our insurance.

Downsizing help for seniors: what to keep, give, sell or let go

Downsizing is mostly decisions. A few steps make them easier.

  • Start with the new floor plan. Measure the rooms and closets. Keep what fits and what you use or love.
  • Offer family pieces early. Give relatives a date to pick up what they want.
  • Sell what has value. An estate sale company can price and sell furniture, collectibles and household goods. Our list of local pros we recommend includes estate sale companies.
  • Donate what’s useful. Call the charity first to ask what it takes. Our crews can bring heavy pieces down to the garage for a donation pickup.
  • Let go of the rest. Our junk removal service picks up what’s left.

The same list includes handymen for small repairs and shelves at the new place. If you’re selling the house, it also lists home stagers, painters and real estate agents. Nobody has paid to be listed.

Staying in your home and clearing out a few rooms? We also move furniture within a home, with same-day or next-day help.

Some families also hire a senior move manager to lead the sorting and the schedule. Fischer Van Lines is a moving company, not a senior move manager, and we’re glad to work alongside one.

Moving to assisted living or independent living

Every senior community sets its own move-in rules. We plan the move around them.

  • Move-in rules: send us the community’s rules, or ask the move-in coordinator to call us. We schedule the crew for the allowed days and hours.
  • Elevators and loading areas: if the building asks you to reserve an elevator or a loading area, tell us the time. We plan the crew and the truck around it.
  • Certificate of insurance: if the community needs one, we send it on request.
  • A smaller space: measure the new rooms, or share the community’s floor plan. We place each piece where you want it and set up the bed.
  • Lift chairs and hospital-style beds: we move these, too.
  • Dates that don’t line up: our climate-controlled storage covers a few days to a few weeks. We don’t offer long-term storage, but our pros list includes storage facilities for longer stays.

When family lives out of town

Many families help from another city or state. Most of the planning can happen from home.

  • Get the estimate from afar. Call us, or have someone at the house show us around on a video call. Our quote form also takes a walkthrough video or a video link.
  • Pick one point person. One family member as the main contact, for us and for the community, keeps plans simple.
  • Stay in touch. Call our office at (720) 297-9904, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, with questions before or during the move.
  • Spanish speakers: several of our crew members speak Spanish.
  • Moving a parent closer to you? Our own crews drive long-distance moves from Denver. Each move gets its own truck, with real-time tracking updates along the way.

What a senior move costs

  • Your quote spells out every charge before moving day, including drive time.
  • Seniors 65 and older get 15% off all services with valid ID. Students and all military members and veterans get the same 15%.
  • Long-distance moves get a contract price.
  • Estimates are free, by phone, video or in person.
