There is strong evidence that the Arapahoe indians maintained a semipermanent encampment in the vicinity of Gregory Hill prior to the 1850's in the area that would later become Westminster Colorado. The discovery of Gold in Colorado in 1858 convinced many to stay in Colorado rather than undertake the arduous journey to California.
The Homestead Act of 1862 brought a flood of settlers to the area; among them Jim Baker (called the 'Forgotten Mountain Man'). Jim served as a Scout, Guide and Interpreter. He knew several dialects and was even Chief of the Shoshoni briefly.
In 1870, Pleasant DeSpain: the first permanent settler in the area built his home on 160 acres of farmland, later called DeSpain Junction. He and his five sons farmed grain, apples and cherries.

Initially named Harris, the community changed it's name upon incorporation in 1911 to Westminster Colorado in honor of Westminster University which was being hailed as the "Princton of the West"
